Passive Cruelty (Acts of Omission)
Passive cruelty is typified by cases of neglect, where the crime is a lack of action rather than the action itself - however do not let the terminology fool you. Severe animal neglect can cause incredible pain and suffering to an animal.
Active Cruelty (Acts of Comission)
Active cruelty implies malicious intent, where a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal, and is sometimes referred to as NAI (Non-Accidental Injury). Acts of intentional cruelty are often some of the most disturbing and should be considered signs of serious psychological problems. This type of behavior is often associated with sociopathic behavior and should be taken very seriously.

75% of prison inmates have early criminal records of animal abuse and a 1983 study showed that 88% of child abuse cases in NJ had at least one family member who physically abused animals.
Reported in 1997 that 153 violent animal abusers whose behavior was tracked for ten years, 70% committed other crimes and 38% committed violent crimes. Only 15% of animal abuse cases were heard in court and only 8% received jail time. Of 101 victims of domestic violence, 73 reported their abuser threatened to or harmed their pets.
A member of the FBI's behavioral science unit asked 36 incarcerated multiple murderers about their involvement with animal abuse and one third said they killed and tortured animals when they were children and half said they did it when they were teens.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
